The new year brings new inspiration to set a course for career success, however, you define it. If you’ve been at a job for a while, you probably have become comfortable and may have even started to coast a bit. But that’s not a great thing for your employer or your career. There are plenty of things you can do yourself to help reinvigorate your work and really engage in your career. To do that, you need to define your goals. You need to measure your success. You need to push yourself forward to conquer those goals. Here are some of the most impactful ways to approach your 2023 career goals and make your dreams come true.

Clarify Your Goals

If you don’t know what you want out of your life, it’s really difficult to work toward unclear goals. Knowing what you want will help you figure out how best to get what you want. This is true in your personal life as well as in your professional life. Not knowing what you want out of your career can mean the difference between settling for less than you deserve and making an effective process. Make this the year you get clear on what you want.

Take on Projects of Expanded Responsibility

One of the most important signs that your career is moving forward is a noted increase in responsibility. If you have mastered the tasks originally assigned to you and are able to take on more difficult or complex assignments, it is clear that your co-workers and managers trust and respect your abilities on the job. But they won’t give them to you if they don’t think you are ready for them. Speak up if needed.  Taking on increasing responsibility can be a great way to learn on the job and expand your horizons.

Prioritize Building Your Network

When it comes to living your best life, it’s important to recognize how important other people are to achieving that goal. Networking, both personal and professional, makes a big difference in creating the supportive infrastructure you most benefit from. Friends and family, colleagues and mentors, clients and partners all weave together a beneficial social structure that will help you succeed and grow. Prioritizing your network helps you drive your career forward and enjoy your life in between jobs as well.

Take Initiative

Career growth isn’t like running on a treadmill. Sometimes the path to success takes some turns and even over some bumps or obstacles. But taking the initiative and knowing that you are the true owner and master of your career will help you stay on course. Work with your manager to design career-advancing goals that will increase responsibility and challenge your skills and abilities on the job. Staying in one position for the extent of your career is possible, but all professionals benefit from the increasing challenge and financial stability of a growing career. Look for opportunities where that might help you progress, and don’t be afraid to take smart risks. They can help you progress faster and in sometimes surprising ways.
