Summertime is fun time, right? Well, not necessarily for those looking for a new job. Staying focused when everyone around you seems to want to relax can be a real challenge, but with these summer job search guidelines, you’ll help yourself stay on track, find the job you’re looking for, and still have time for summer fun. Here’s how you can do it.

Write Down Your Goals

Goals are really important in a job search, just as they are in business. You need to know and document what it is you’re looking to achieve. Do you want a role with a specific company? Are you looking to branch out into a new industry? Do you want to take the next step in your career? Write it down. If the goal is vague or hard to understand, then clarify it. Break it down into the tasks you know you’ll need to tackle in order to get you from point a to point b and beyond. Know what your goals are, and why they are important to you. Then stick to them. It doesn’t matter what time of year you accomplish your goals. Summertime is just like any other time. You need to see the path clearly in order to get where you want to go.

Network Differently In the Summer

Summertime is an opportunity to get out of your networking rut. If you are having trouble making the connections you are looking for through the usual industry events or LinkedIn groups, now is a perfect time to branch out. Sign up for a class that you’re interested in to expand your skill set. Join a networking group where you actually get out there and meet people in person. Attend a convention where professionals in your future role are in attendance. Volunteer for a project or a cause that you’re passionate about. These opportunities are plentiful in the summer months and can provide the opportunity to connect with people you’d never have the chance to meet the rest of the year.

Organize Your Time Effectively

As is true in any job search, organizing your time effectively is important in the summer. There are lots of distractions to keep you off task, but it’s so important to stay focused. Block off time every day to do something for your job search. Whether it’s updating your resume, applying to a new job, or researching a company you’re interested in, you need to be diligent in your efforts and make sure the job search doesn’t fall by the wayside. Remember that your dream job is unlikely to just fall into your lap. You need to stay on track and do the work that will get your resume the attention it deserves.

Make Time for Relaxation

While it’s important to stay focused on your job search during the summer months, it’s also important to make time for relaxation and enjoyment. If you don’t schedule your downtime, it’s really easy to burn out on your job search. Make sure you have the downtime to balance out your focused efforts. You only get so many summers in your lifetime. Don’t let this one slip by without taking some time to appreciate it.
